Albania

4.8 (96 reviews)Republic of Albania

Your first morning in Gjirokastër, you'll hear the call to prayer echo off Ottoman-era stone walls before a single tourist stirs. Albania is the Europe that hasn't been overrun yet — Ionian waters the same impossible blue as the Maldives, mountain roads that carve through villages where people still wave at passing cars, and a history so layered it'll keep you asking questions long after you're home. For Indian travellers planning an Albania tour package from Mumbai, Pune, or Bangalore, this is the destination your group chat will not stop talking about.

Trip Details

Ottoman bazaars, Ionian beaches, and mountain villages where the Wi-Fi cuts out — Albania rewards the curious traveller who arrives first.

At 7am in Berat's old quarter, the only sound is a river running below whitewashed Ottoman houses stacked so close together their windows seem to share secrets. A tabby cat crosses the cobblestones. A grandmother pushes open wooden shutters three stories above you. The smell of fresh bread drifts from a bakery that's been here since the 1800s. This is Albania before the rest of Europe wakes up — raw, quiet, and entirely its own.

Wedged between Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Greece, Albania is the Balkans' most misunderstood country and its most compelling. The Albanian Riviera — a 170-kilometre stretch of Ionian coastline from Vlorë to Sarandë — holds beaches like Ksamil and Gjipe that rival anything in Santorini at a fraction of the footfall. Inland, Gjirokastër and Berat are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, their Ottoman-era architecture surviving centuries of invasion, communism, and isolation. What most travellers don't know: Albania sits atop some of Europe's most untouched hiking terrain — the Accursed Mountains (Valbona and Theth) offer multi-day treks through scenery that would stop a seasoned Himalayan trekker in their tracks. The country also has one of the highest numbers of bunkers per square kilometre anywhere in the world — over 170,000 concrete mushroom-shaped domes built during the Cold War by dictator Enver Hoxha — now being repurposed as art installations, cafes, and guesthouses.

Safari Sutra approaches Albania not as a tick-box European tour but as a genuine discovery journey. We sequence your itinerary so you reach Berat on a weekday morning when the castle is nearly empty, and schedule your Riviera days for late afternoon when the light turns gold and day-trippers have left. Our network of curated family-run guesthouses — called bujtina locally — means you eat what Albanians actually eat, not tourist-menu approximations. We ensure Indian breakfast options are available each morning, and our team has mapped vegetarian-friendly restaurants across Tirana, Berat, and the Riviera so you never land in a coastal town wondering what to eat.

The best time to travel from India to Albania is May to June and September to October — the sea is warm, the crowds are thin, and the light is extraordinary. July and August bring a beach crowd from Kosovo and North Macedonia, which fills the Riviera but keeps it lively. This destination suits couples looking for a European honeymoon without Paris prices, solo Indian travellers drawn to offbeat history, and families with teenagers who'd rather explore a Cold War bunker than stand in line at the Eiffel Tower. Indian travellers from Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore typically route through Istanbul or Vienna, with journey times of 10–14 hours total. If you've been meaning to do Europe differently — Albania is where that instinct leads.

Nearest Airport

Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA) — the country's only international airport, located 17 km northwest of Tirana city centre.

Nearest Railway Station

Albania's rail network is limited and not recommended for tourist travel. Intercity buses and shared furgon minivans are the standard and reliable mode of transport between cities.

How To Reach From Mumbai

No direct flights. Common connections via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, ~11–13 hrs total travel time), Vienna (Austrian Airlines/Air Arabia routed through hubs), or Rome.

How To Reach From Pune

Fly from Pune (PNQ) via Mumbai, Delhi, or Hyderabad to connect to Istanbul or Vienna onward to Tirana. Total journey time approximately 14–18 hours depending on layover.

How To Reach From Bangalore

Fly from Kempegowda International (BLR) via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) — approximately 11–14 hours with layover. This is currently the most convenient routing from South India.

How To Reach From Hyderabad

Fly from Rajiv Gandhi International (HYD) via Istanbul or Dubai. Total travel time approximately 12–16 hours. Turkish Airlines and Air Arabia offer competitive fares on this corridor.

Visa Required

Yes — Indian passport holders require a visa to enter Albania. Albania accepts a valid Schengen visa (Type C, issued by any Schengen member state) or a valid US/UK visa as a basis for visa-free entry for short stays. Alternatively, an Albanian e-visa can be applied for online.

Currency

Albanian Lek (ALL). Approximate rate: 1 EUR ≈ 110 ALL; 1 INR ≈ 1.3 ALL (rate as of early 2025 — confirm before publishing). Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas, hotels, and larger restaurants. ATMs are available in all main cities.

Local Language

Albanian (Shqip). English is widely spoken in Tirana, major tourist towns, and by hospitality staff. Italian is also understood in coastal areas.

Time Zone

Central European Time (CET) — UTC+1 (UTC+2 during summer daylight saving). Albania is 4.5 hours behind IST.

Recommended Vaccinations

No mandatory vaccinations for Indian passport holders entering Albania. Standard travel health precautions apply.

Albania landscape

Why Safari Sutra

Albania rewards the traveller who sequences it right — and the sequencing is everything. We route you through Berat on a weekday when the castle neighbourhood is lived-in and quiet rather than gridlocked, and we position your Riviera stay so you catch the Ksamil islands in early morning light before the day boats arrive. Our local contacts include a network of bujtina guesthouse owners who have been hosting travellers for over a decade — people who will tell you which cove to visit at low tide and which mountain path to avoid in wet weather. Because Albania is still unfamiliar territory for most Indian travellers, our team has personally recced the Valbona trek, the Butrint site, and the Tirana nightlife stretch — so when your plans shift at the last minute, we adapt without scrambling.

I think if you want to have a hassle free Trip then mr. Sukhendu Reddy is the man for you. We, family of 3 went to Singapore and Malaysia through his agency. Everything was so meticulously planned , the timings amazed us a lot. It was perfect. The vehicles provided, the city tours and the guides were all good at what they assigned to. And the most surprising was Mr. Sukhendu's patience. He would attend to our calls any time of the day , though the timings differed by 2 and a half hours . I think that is an important quality of a travel agent. Go for it guys. You will love it.
