Ooty and Kodaikanal Hill Station Combo Tour 2026

By Safari Sutra Team·Updated June 29, 2026

The air hits you first. You step out at Ooty in the early morning and it's cool, almost cold, carrying the smell of eucalyptus and wet earth. The Nilgiri hills sit heavy around you in that pre-noon quiet, green in every direction. A cup of strong filter coffee appears in your hand at the guesthouse, and you think, this is what I needed.

That's how most Ooty and Kodaikanal combo tours begin, and honestly, it's a pretty good beginning.

These two hill stations have been drawing Indian travellers for well over a century, and they still deliver. Not because they're trendy, but because they're genuinely beautiful, genuinely cool (temperature and otherwise), and within reach for most Indian families without burning a hole in the pocket. Whether you're coming from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, or Delhi, this 7-day combo itinerary gives you both hills properly, without rushing either one.

Day-by-Day Breakdown

Day 1: Arrive Coimbatore, Drive to Ooty

Coimbatore is your gateway. Flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai connect here frequently, and the airport is small enough that you're in a cab within 20 minutes of landing. The drive up to Ooty takes roughly three hours via the Kallar-Coonoor route, and it earns every minute of that drive time. You're climbing through 36 hairpin bends on the Nilgiri roads, passing tea gardens and shola forests, and the temperature drops noticeably as you go.

Reach Ooty by afternoon, check into your hotel, and let the altitude hit your system. Don't push yourself to do anything today. Walk down to the town bazaar instead, pick up some fresh Nilgiri tea and homemade chocolate (the Ooty chocolate shops near Commercial Road are the real deal), and find a good South Indian thali for dinner. Establishments like Hotel Dasaprakash have been serving travellers here for decades.

Day 2: Ooty Sightseeing and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Start early because the light is best before 10 AM. Head to the Government Botanical Gardens first, spread across 55 acres on the slopes of Doddabetta. The gardens go back to 1848 and have a fossil tree section that's genuinely interesting, not just filler. From there, Doddabetta Peak is a short drive and gives you a clear view over the entire Nilgiri range on days when the mist cooperates.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, runs between Mettupalayam and Ooty with a stop at Coonoor. The toy train ride is slower than walking pace at some points, which sounds frustrating until you realize you're watching tea gardens scroll past your window in slow motion. Book tickets in advance through IRCTC because this one fills up. Ooty Lake is worth a late afternoon visit, and if you're travelling with kids, the rowboats are a big hit.

Eat dinner at a local dhaba near the market. The mutton stew here, served with appam, is the kind of thing you'll talk about at your desk on a Tuesday two months later.

Day 3: Coonoor Day Trip, Then Drive to Kodaikanal

Coonoor is 17 km from Ooty and a completely different energy. It's quieter, less commercial, and the tea estates around it are some of the most visited in the Nilgiris. Sim's Park, a botanical garden set on a hillside, is well-maintained and pleasantly uncrowded compared to Ooty's attractions. Highfield Tea Estate offers a proper tea tour if you want to understand the whole process from leaf to cup.

After lunch, you begin the drive toward Kodaikanal. This is a long drive, around 5-6 hours depending on the route you take, so start by early afternoon. The route passes through Coimbatore and Palani, and while it's not the most scenic leg of the journey, the ghats as you rise toward Kodai make up for it. Arrive by evening, check in, and sleep early. You'll need the rest.

Day 4: Kodaikanal Lake, Coaker's Walk, Bryant Park

Kodaikanal sits at 2,133 metres above sea level, which is actually higher than Ooty, and the air here has a sharpness to it that feels different from the Nilgiris. The lake at the centre of town is star-shaped, built in 1863, and you can cycle around it in about 45 minutes. Hire a cycle from one of the shops near the boat club and go early while the mist is still sitting on the water.

Coaker's Walk is a 1-km paved path along the edge of a cliff, with the plains of Tamil Nadu visible far below on clear days. The views can vanish in minutes when the mist rolls in, so time your visit for late morning. Bryant Park, run by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department, is well worth a couple of hours and is particularly good from May to June during the flower season.

Eat at one of the cafes on Club Road for dinner. Kodaikanal has a mix of good South Indian and Continental options, a legacy of the many missionary schools established here. The hot chocolate at some of the bakeries is genuinely excellent.

Day 5: Pillar Rocks, Guna Cave, Bear Shola Falls, Berijam Lake

This is the outdoor day, and it's the one most people remember longest. Pillar Rocks are three massive granite formations rising about 120 metres from the valley floor. The viewpoint is best in the morning before clouds move in.

Guna Cave (also known as Devil's Kitchen) is a network of caverns made famous by the 1991 Tamil film Guna. The caves themselves are currently restricted for entry due to safety concerns, but the surrounding area and viewpoint are accessible and worth seeing. Bear Shola Falls, named because bears were once seen drinking here, is a 20-minute walk through a small forest patch.

Berijam Lake, about 21 km from town, requires a permit from the Forest Department and a local guide, but it is one of those places that rewards the effort. The lake sits inside the Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary and the surrounding shola forest has purple-blue Kurinji flowers during their blooming season (which happens once every 12 years, last in 2018, next in 2030). The Incredible India portal has updated information on permit requirements and forest timings before you plan this stop.

Day 6: Forest Trail, Local Markets, Leisure

Keep Day 6 slow. The Palani Hills around Kodaikanal have short trekking trails that don't require serious fitness levels, and a half-day walk through the shola forest is worth doing with a local guide. The bird life here is exceptional, especially in the early morning.

The afternoon is for the town itself. The local bazaar near the bus stand sells spices, homemade jams, eucalyptus oil, and Kodai cheese (yes, cheese, a local specialty that's been produced here since the 1950s). Pick up enough for the flight home. Evening is free. Find a spot with a valley view and watch the light change.

Day 7: Departure via Madurai or Coimbatore

Most travellers fly out from Madurai (about 3.5 hours from Kodaikanal) or from Coimbatore (about 4-5 hours). Both have good flight connections to major Indian cities. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can stop at the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai on your way, one of the most architecturally rich temples in India and worth at least two hours of your time.

Total Cost in INR

Here's a realistic breakdown for two adults in 2026, based on mid-range preferences:

  • Flights (round trip from Bengaluru or Chennai, per person): Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 8,000
  • Flights (from Mumbai or Delhi, per person): Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 14,000
  • Accommodation (6 nights, mid-range): Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 35,000 for two
  • Ground package (transfers, vehicle, driver): Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 28,000 for two
  • Meals (3 meals a day, 6 days): Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 10,000 for two
  • Entry tickets and activities: Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 4,000 for two

Total estimate for two adults: Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 1,10,000 depending on your choices, with the biggest variable being flight prices and accommodation category.

Families or groups of four travelling together bring the per-person cost down considerably because transfers and vehicle costs are shared. If you'd like a detailed quote tailored to your travel dates, Plan Your Trip with Safari Sutra and we'll break it down exactly.

Tips for Making the Most of Every Day

  • Travel between October and June. July to September is monsoon season in the Nilgiris and Palani Hills. Roads can get tricky and visibility at viewpoints drops significantly.
  • Book the toy train early. Nilgiri Mountain Railway tickets disappear fast on weekends and holidays. Book 30 days out on IRCTC if you can.
  • Pack layers, not just a light jacket. Ooty and Kodaikanal mornings can be genuinely cold, especially between November and February. A proper fleece or light woolens will serve you better than a windbreaker.
  • Start each sightseeing day before 9 AM. Mist clears earlier, crowds arrive later. You'll have the viewpoints largely to yourself in that first hour.
  • Get the Berijam Lake permit sorted the evening before. The Forest Department office at Kodaikanal issues these, and they have limited slots per day.
  • Don't skip Coonoor for Ooty. Most travellers treat Coonoor as a quick detour. Give it a proper half-day and you'll find it's a different, slower Nilgiri entirely.
  • Hire a local guide for at least one day in Kodaikanal. They know the forest trails and the bird species you'd otherwise walk right past.
