Vietnam spans over 1,600 kilometres from north to south, and that distance translates into genuinely different worlds. Hanoi — the north's capital — carries its French colonial past in broad boulevards, faded yellow buildings, and a café culture that takes its coffee extremely seriously (cà phê trứng, egg coffee, is not optional). Central Vietnam is where history presses hardest: Hue's imperial citadel, the ancient trading port of Hoi An where Japanese, Chinese, and Portuguese merchants once negotiated over silk, and the Marble Mountains riddled with Buddhist cave shrines. The south belongs to the Mekong Delta — a living, waterlogged web of canals where floating markets begin at 4am and rice paddies stretch to every horizon. Vietnam also holds one of the world's great natural spectacles: Halong Bay, where 1,600 limestone islands rise from the Gulf of Tonkin — though the lesser-visited Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay offer the same geology with a fraction of the crowd.

Vietnam's optimal travel window for Indian visitors is October through April, when the north and south are largely dry and temperatures across the country stay manageable. Families from Mumbai and Pune will find Vietnam genuinely child-friendly: the distances aren't enormous, the food has plenty of safe options, and the country is overwhelmingly safe.
