Hurghada Egypt: Red Sea Diving and Beach Resort Guide for Indians

By Safari Sutra Team·Updated June 30, 2026

The water is so clear here that you can see your own shadow on the sandy bottom, six metres below the surface. You're floating above a coral garden the colour of a sunset, watching a school of parrotfish drift past like they have nowhere to be. Above the waterline, the Egyptian sun is warm but not punishing, the air smells faintly of salt and coconut sunscreen, and somewhere behind you, a beach bar is playing something low and unhurried. This is Hurghada on a Tuesday morning, and it feels nothing like what most Indians imagine Egypt to be.

Hurghada Egypt for Indian Travellers: What You Actually Get

Most people think Egypt and immediately picture pyramids, pharaohs, and Nile feluccas. And yes, all of that is incredible. But Hurghada is Egypt's other face: a resort city on the western shore of the Red Sea, about 500 kilometres south of Cairo, built almost entirely around sun, sand, and some of the best diving in the world.

For Indian travellers specifically, Hurghada works really well. It's cheaper than the Maldives. It's more interesting than most European beach towns. The food is varied enough that vegetarians won't struggle. The hotels are proper five-star resorts by any standard, with large pools, beach access, and all-inclusive options that suit Indian families who like knowing their costs upfront. And unlike a purely city-focused trip, you can genuinely switch off here.

The city itself is split broadly into two zones: El Dahar, the older part with local markets and cheaper eating, and the newer resort strip along Sakkala and further south toward El Gouna, which is almost its own self-contained town built by a billionaire on a series of lagoons. Most visitors stay in the resort strip and barely venture into the old town, which is honestly a bit of a shame because the local fish markets and spice shops are worth an afternoon.

Hurghada also makes an excellent add-on to a Cairo and Nile trip. If you're already planning a Pyramids holiday, pairing it with four or five nights by the Red Sea gives you a trip that covers everything from ancient history to coral reefs. Safari Sutra Holidays has been putting together exactly these kinds of combination packages for over 12 years.

Best Time to Visit (Month-by-Month, Honest)

October to April is the sweet spot. Temperatures sit between 20°C and 28°C, the sea is calm, visibility underwater is excellent, and you won't feel like you're walking into a furnace every time you step off the beach. This is peak season for a reason, and December-January can get busy with European tourists escaping their winters.

May and September are shoulder months. Still warm, slightly fewer crowds, and prices dip a bit. The wind picks up in spring (March to May), which makes it great for kitesurfers and windsurfers but occasionally annoying if you're just trying to relax on a sunbed.

June to August is hot. Very hot. Temperatures hit 38-40°C regularly, and while the sea stays wonderfully warm, the midday heat is intense. Budget-conscious Indian travellers sometimes pick this window because prices drop significantly, but factor in that you'll want to stay close to air conditioning and pools between 11am and 4pm.

Top Experiences You Can't Miss

Snorkelling and Scuba Diving at Giftun Islands

The Giftun Island National Park is the main draw. Day trips leave from Hurghada Marina every morning, taking you to two protected islands with some of the best shallow-water snorkelling on the planet. You don't need to be a diver: even with just a mask and fins, you'll see lionfish, moray eels, reef sharks (the small, harmless kind), and coral formations that look almost architectural.

If you do dive, or want to learn, Hurghada has dozens of reputable dive centres offering PADI courses. A beginner open-water certification can be completed in three days.

Sunset Quad Biking and Desert Safari

Fifteen minutes from the resort strip, you're in proper Egyptian desert. Quad bike tours go out in the late afternoon, timed so you hit the sand dunes just as the light turns gold. Some tours include a Bedouin camp stop with mint tea, bread baked in the sand, and a short camel ride. It's a bit touristy, yes, but also genuinely fun and a good break from the beach.

El Gouna Day Trip

El Gouna is an eco-resort town built on a series of artificial islands connected by waterways, about 30 kilometres north of Hurghada. It has a very different vibe: quieter, more boutique, with small restaurants, a marina, and a relaxed pace that's worth half a day. Hire a buggy and just wander.

Dolphin Watching at Sataya Reef

This is the one experience that separates serious travellers from the resort-pool crowd. Sataya Reef is a full-day boat trip south to one of the world's best spots for swimming with spinner dolphins in the open sea. It's a long day, about ten hours including travel, but watching a pod of fifty dolphins spiral and leap around your boat in clear blue water is something you genuinely won't forget.

Getting There: Flights from India

There are no direct flights from India to Hurghada yet, which surprises a lot of people. Your best connections go through Cairo, Dubai, Sharjah, Doha, or Muscat.

From Mumbai: IndiGo, Air Arabia, and flydubai connect through their respective hubs with total travel times of 8-11 hours depending on layover.

From Delhi: EgyptAir via Cairo is often the cleanest routing, with one stop and reasonably short layover times. Total travel around 9-10 hours.

From Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai: Connections via Dubai or Sharjah are most common. Budget for 12-14 hours total including transit.

Hurghada International Airport is compact and easy. Once you land, it's about 20-30 minutes to most resort hotels.

Visa, Vaccinations & Practical Prep

Visa: Egyptian visa on arrival is available for Indian passport holders at Hurghada International Airport. As of 2025, the fee is USD 25 (approximately INR 2,100), payable in US dollars or euros. You'll need to bring cash for this. Egypt also offers an e-visa online at visa2egypt.gov.eg, which is worth applying for in advance to save time at the airport.

Vaccinations: No mandatory vaccines are required for Egypt from India. Routine vaccinations (hepatitis A, typhoid) are generally recommended, but consult your doctor. For general guidance on travel health prep, Incredible India also carries useful health and travel advisories for outbound travellers in some sections.

Currency: Egyptian Pound (EGP). ATMs are widely available in resort areas. Cards work at most hotels and larger restaurants. Carry some cash for markets, local taxis, and small tips.

Dress code: Hurghada's resort strip is casual and beach-friendly. If you visit El Dahar or local markets, modest dressing is appreciated, especially for women.

Food: Most five-star hotels serve a wide buffet that includes vegetarian options, eggs, and Indian-friendly dishes. Local Egyptian food (koshari, ful medames, grilled fish) is also generally well-suited to Indian palates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Hurghada safe for Indian families?
Yes. Hurghada is one of Egypt's most tourist-friendly cities with a significant international presence year-round. The resort areas are well-policed and generally very safe. Standard urban caution applies in local markets, but this is no different from any tourist city.

Q: Can vegetarians find food easily in Hurghada?
Largely yes, especially in five-star all-inclusive resorts that cater to European and Indian guests. Local Egyptian cuisine has good vegetarian options: hummus, baba ganoush, falafel, and rice dishes are everywhere. Strict vegans may need to communicate more carefully at smaller restaurants.

Q: Is the Red Sea good for beginner swimmers or non-swimmers?
Many snorkelling spots are accessible from boats with life jackets, so non-swimmers can still participate safely. Several tour operators specifically cater to beginners. If you're booking with Safari Sutra Holidays, just tell us your comfort level in water and we'll match you to the right activities.

Q: How does Hurghada compare to the Maldives for an Indian traveller?
Hurghada is typically 30-40% more affordable than the Maldives for a comparable number of nights. The coral and marine life in both destinations are genuinely excellent, though the Maldives has more dramatic overwater villa experiences. Hurghada wins on variety: you get desert, history, and culture alongside the beach, which the Maldives can't offer.

Q: What's the best way to combine Hurghada with Cairo?
Fly into Cairo, spend three nights covering the pyramids, Sphinx, and Egyptian Museum, then take a one-hour EgyptAir domestic flight to Hurghada for your beach days. This sequencing (history first, relaxation second) is the format that works best logistically and emotionally. See our Egypt Pyramids & Nile Tour Packages for full Cairo itinerary details.

Q: When should I book to get the best rates?
For October to February travel, book at least three to four months in advance. Last-minute deals do exist in summer, but peak season availability at good resorts fills up fast, particularly for rooms with sea views or family suites.

Q: Is there any nightlife in Hurghada?
Yes, more than you'd expect. The Marina strip has bars, beach clubs, and restaurants that stay lively until midnight or later. It's not Ibiza, but it's genuinely fun, especially around the newer resort developments. El Gouna also has a relaxed evening scene around its lagoon-side restaurants.

Plan Your Hurghada Egypt Trip with Safari Sutra

After 12 years and 15,000+ trips, we've found the biggest difference between an average trip and a great one is guide quality and timing. In Hurghada's case, that means getting you on the water at the right hour for the best light and least crowded reefs, and pairing you with dive centres and boat operators who actually know these waters rather than just filling seats on a tour bus. These are details we sort out for every Safari Sutra client before you arrive.

Whether you're planning a pure beach escape, a diving trip, or a full Egypt combination holiday starting at the pyramids and ending with sundowners on the Red Sea, we'll put together an itinerary that fits how you actually travel, not a template that fits everyone and delights no one.
