The trek begins before sunrise. Your boots are already caked with red mud when the guide raises a fist — stop. Fifteen metres ahead, half-hidden in giant heliconia leaves, a juvenile gorilla rolls onto its back, legs in the air, entirely unbothered by your presence. Behind it, a silverback — 200 kilograms of quiet authority — shifts his gaze from the forest canopy to you. He holds it for three long seconds. In that moment, every flight connection, every early morning, and every aching quad is paid in full. This is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This is Uganda.

Uganda is the only country in the world where you can track both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in their natural habitat within the same trip. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the south-west, shelters roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population — estimated at just over 1,000 individuals (📝 confirm current figure with Uganda Wildlife Authority before publishing). To the north, Kibale Forest is the primate capital of Africa, home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species. Queen Elizabeth National Park adds the rare spectacle of lions draped across the branches of ancient fig trees — a behaviour found almost nowhere else on Earth. Uganda's equatorial climate keeps the landscape perpetually green, and unlike Kenya or Tanzania, you will rarely share a gorilla trek with more than seven other visitors.

The ideal window for a Uganda gorilla safari from India is June to September, when the dry season firms up the forest trails and makes gorilla trekking more accessible. December to February offers a shorter dry window with fewer international visitors. A minimum of 7 nights is recommended to cover Bwindi and at least one other park — 10 nights allows you to add Kibale and Jinja without rushing. This is a journey suited to couples looking for something beyond a beach holiday, solo wildlife photographers who want concentrated time in the forest, and adventure-minded families with older teenagers.
