December to February — when the valley turns white and the crowd turns small

In January, the saffron fields around Pampore are invisible under two feet of snow. Dal Lake, which spends eight months reflecting mountain scenery with liquid precision, goes partially frozen at the edges — and shikara rides in this light, with ice crystals forming in the boatman's wake, produce photographs that summer visitors never get to take. This 5-night Kashmir winter package is built around the valley's coldest and least crowded season — when Gulmarg's ski slopes see actual powder conditions, when Pahalgam's pine forest carries enough snow to bend the branches horizontal, and when the houseboat hotels close but the 4-star city properties in Srinagar run heated rooms and excellent Kashmiri cuisine without summer-season pressure. Gulmarg in winter is the centrepiece: the Gondola runs to Apharwat ridge through a landscape that switches from pine forest to above-treeline snowfield in 12 minutes. Skiing equipment is rentable at the resort. Snowboarding, sledging and snowshoeing are available for those who have no interest in skis. For those who have interest in neither, the view from the Phase 1 station is sufficient reason to be here. Ideal for friends, young couples or solo travellers who want snow with a side of culture — and can pack properly for temperatures that drop to -10°C at Gulmarg on clear nights. Winter Kashmir is a different country from the same geography.
