Uluru begins changing colour 35 minutes before sunrise. You need to be at the dune viewing area by 5:45 AM — earlier in winter — with your tripod already set, your exposure bracketed, and your coffee finished. The rock moves through seven distinct shades of red before it reaches the colour your eye expects from every photograph you've seen of it. Nothing about the experience is overstated; nothing is underwhelming. It is simply one of the world's great geological subjects and it cooperates most generously in the hour before the tour buses arrive. This 10-night photography circuit is built for travellers who shoot with intent. Uluru gives you two dawns and a dusk — enough to work the light properly and experiment with foreground composition using the desert spinifex. The Kimberley delivers gorge water reflections so still in the dry season that the red stone doubles itself perfectly. The Daintree is prehistoric rainforest with a specific quality of filtered morning light that makes even a standard lens produce images that look like medium-format work. The Great Ocean Road closes the circuit with the Twelve Apostles at golden hour — sea stacks that photographers have shot for 60 years and which still offer original frames at the right tide and light angle. Safari Sutra times every transfer around the shoot windows — accommodation near Uluru is the desert lodge that puts you 20 minutes from the dune viewing area, not the hotel that requires a 45-minute bus ride.
