You're three and a half hours from Mumbai, and yet Oman feels like a country the world forgot to rush. Wadi Shab's turquoise pools sit between canyon walls so sheer they block the afternoon sun. The Grand Mosque in Muscat opens its courtyards to a quiet you won't find in any Indian city. At Wahiba Sands, the dunes shift colour from gold to copper as the sun drops. Oman tour packages from India are rising fast — and the travellers who go now still have the wadis largely to themselves.
Ancient forts, pink sand dunes, and fjords that look borrowed from Norway — Oman is the Middle East that most Indians haven't found yet.
It's 5:45am in Wahiba Sands, and your Bedouin camp is still dark. You step outside — the cold hits first (yes, the desert is cold at dawn), then the silence, then the sky. There is no light pollution for sixty kilometres in any direction. The stars don't twinkle here — they simply burn. By the time your guide has the tea ready and the sun is pulling itself over the dune ridge, you understand why Omanis talk about the desert as a place you go to think, not to escape.
Oman is the quieter, older sibling of the UAE — a country that chose to preserve its mud-brick forts instead of demolishing them, that kept its fishing villages intact while building new roads around them. The Hajar Mountains divide the coast from the interior, and within that range, the Omani government has laid one of the most driveable mountain roads in the Arabian Peninsula — the Al Hajar route through Jebel Akhdar, where rose water is distilled from petals grown at 2,000 metres above sea level. Wadi Bani Khalid and Wadi Shab are not tourist constructs — locals have swum in these canyon pools for generations. One detail most travellers miss: Oman has its own fjords. The Musandam Peninsula's khor (inlets) are indistinguishable from Norwegian fjords, except the water is warmer and dolphins follow your dhow.
Safari Sutra's Oman itineraries are built around one principle: the country rewards slow travel. We don't rush you through Muscat's Muttrah Souq in forty-five minutes — we build in a proper hour and a half, with a local contact who'll point you toward the silver shops the tour buses skip. Our desert camps at Wahiba are chosen for their distance from the highway, so you actually get the silence you came for. Indian vegetarians travelling with us don't need to worry — we pre-brief every camp and restaurant on Indian food preferences and ensure dal, rice, roti, and sabzi options are available throughout.
Oman is best between October and April, when temperatures drop to a manageable 22–30°C on the coast and genuinely cool at altitude. December and January are peak months — ideal for families travelling during school holidays from Mumbai, Pune, and Bangalore. Couples find Oman particularly suited to a first international trip together: it is one of the safest countries in the world, the roads are excellent, and the people are disarmingly hospitable without being intrusive. Solo Indian travellers — including women — find Oman unusually comfortable. If you've been sitting on an Oman trip from India, the October window is the one to move on.

Important Note:
We recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your trip investment. Please read all terms and conditions carefully before booking.
Most Oman packages from India cluster around Muscat and one wadi, then fill the days with shopping malls. Safari Sutra's itineraries are routed to move you outward from Muscat — into the desert, up to the mountains, and back along the coast — in a sequence that actually makes geographic sense and cuts out back-tracking. We choose desert camps based on their distance from the main highway (silence matters), and every restaurant and camp in our Oman network has been briefed on Indian food preferences so you're not eating bread and hummus for six days. Our on-ground contacts in Muscat have been working with us for over three years — the kind of relationship that gets your wadi permit confirmed on a busy weekend when walk-in tourists are turned away.
One of the world's largest mosques, open to non-Muslims most mornings; the hand-loomed Persian carpet inside took four years to complete.
Oman's best-preserved 17th-century round tower fort; the views from the cannon deck stretch across date plantations to the Hajar Mountains.
A canyon trail and swim route east of Muscat, culminating in a hidden waterfall chamber accessible only by swimming through a cave.
A 12,500 sq km sand sea of red and white dunes, home to Bedouin communities who still practise traditional camel herding.

One of the oldest covered markets in the Arab world; silver Khanjar daggers, frankincense, and antique Omani jewellery all sold side by side.
A 2,000m plateau in the Hajar range where pomegranates, roses, and peaches grow in terraced orchards above the cloud line.
Oman's detached northern enclave, where mountain cliffs plunge into turquoise Arabian Gulf waters — accessible by flight or a long drive through UAE.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Oman's oldest mud-brick fortifications, still partially inhabited in the surrounding town.
We don't currently have standard packages for Oman, but we'd love to create a custom travel experience tailored to your preferences and budget.

October through April is the most comfortable window, with coastal temperatures between 22–30°C — warm enough for wadi swimming, cool enough for fort walks and desert drives. December and January are peak months for Indian travellers, especially families on school holiday breaks from Mumbai and Pune. If you're heading to Jebel Akhdar, carry a light jacket — the plateau drops to 8–12°C at night in winter.
