The Konark Sun Temple does not prepare you for itself. You round a corner on a flat Odisha morning, the air carrying salt from the Bay of Bengal twenty kilometres away, and there it stands — a stone chariot built for a god who moves across the sky. Odisha holds a triangle of UNESCO-recognised heritage — Konark's Sun Temple, the Jagannath Temple complex at Puri (one of Hinduism's four sacred dhamas), and the cave temples of Udayagiri and Khandagiri outside Bhubaneswar — all within 70 kilometres of each other. But the state's cultural geography extends far beyond this axis. In the southern Koraput district, indigenous communities like the Dongria Kondh and Bonda continue centuries-old traditions around weekly tribal markets that double as social calendars. Chilika Lake, spread across 1,100 square kilometres, hosts the largest congregation of migratory birds in the Indian subcontinent during winter months — including Irrawaddy dolphins in its channels year-round. Odisha's cuisine — dalma (lentils simmered with raw banana and coconut), chhena poda (the original Indian cheesecake, baked with caramel), and the temple-prasad rice of Puri — is among the least-documented and most distinct in India.
