Your morning begins before sunrise on Dal Lake — a shikara slipping through still water as the flower sellers paddle past in the mist. Kashmir is one of those places Indian travellers have been dreaming about for decades, and it delivers: snow peaks above Gulmarg, saffron fields outside Pampore, walnut-wood houseboats where the cook makes kahwa the way your hotel never will. Whether you're planning a Kashmir tour package from Mumbai or a winter snow trip from Pune, five days here leaves you genuinely rearranged. The mountains have a way of doing that.
Kashmir is not a postcard. It's the smell of chinar leaves, the creak of a shikara, the cold that makes chai taste different.
It's 5:40am on Dal Lake and your houseboat cook has already started the kangri — the small clay fire pot that Kashmiris press to their chests through winter. You step onto the deck in woollen socks and the lake is completely still. A shikara moves across the far bank, the boatman's oar barely disturbing the surface, loaded with marigolds for the morning flower market. The Zabarwan hills sit dark behind it. This is the version of Kashmir that no reel quite captures — not because it's impossible to photograph, but because the cold is part of the image.
Kashmir's geography is almost disorientating in its variety. The Kashmir Valley — roughly 135 kilometres long and 32 kilometres wide — sits between the Pir Panjal range to the south and the main Himalayas to the north, producing a microclimate that makes spring here electric: tulips before April ends, cherry blossom in March, chinar leaves turning ochre and amber in October. Gulmarg, at 2,650 metres, is among Asia's highest operational golf courses in summer and transforms into a serious ski destination in winter — the gondola climbs to Kongdori and then Apharwat, where the views stretch to Nanga Parbat on clear days. Lesser known: the Lolab Valley near Kupwara, where apple orchards go on for kilometres and you can walk an entire morning without meeting another tourist. Kashmiri cuisine itself is a revelation for Indian travellers — wazwan, the multi-course feast cooked by hereditary cooks called wazas, features rogan josh, yakhni, and gushtaba (meatballs in yoghurt gravy) that bear no resemblance to what arrives in restaurants down south.
Safari Sutra's Kashmir itineraries are built for Indian travellers who've done their research and don't want to be herded. We position our houseboat stays on the quieter southeast stretches of Dal Lake rather than the crowded tourist ghats — the difference in morning light and peace is significant. Our Gulmarg stays are timed so you arrive mid-week, avoiding weekend crowds from Srinagar. We work with Kashmiri guides who speak the language of the Valley — literally and culturally — and who know which dhabas near Pahalgam serve the proper rista rather than a tourist approximation. For Indian vegetarian travellers, we pre-confirm paneer-friendly wazwan alternatives at every meal stop, and every property in our Kashmir collection serves South Indian breakfast on request for families who need idli before 8am.
Kashmir is a year-round destination with distinct characters across seasons: spring (April–June) for Mughal gardens and tulip season; summer (July–August) for Sonmarg and Gurez Valley treks; autumn (September–October) for apple harvest and crystalline skies; and winter (December–February) for Gulmarg snow and the singular experience of a frozen Dal Lake. The valley is best suited for couples, families, and solo travellers from Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad who want India's most dramatic landscape without a passport. A standard 6-night circuit covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam is the right introduction — though once the chinar trees are orange in October, most travellers call us to ask about adding two more days. We're ready for that call.
Important Note:
We recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your trip investment. Please read all terms and conditions carefully before booking.
Safari Sutra selects houseboats on the less-trafficked southeast stretches of Dal Lake — away from the boat-to-boat noise of the main tourist ghats — so your 5:30am shikara departs from quiet water rather than a floating hotel corridor. Our Gulmarg stays are timed mid-week wherever possible, and our guides know Pahalgam's back trails above Betaab Valley that most operators drive past. For Indian vegetarian families and South Indian travellers who can't start a day without idli, every property in our Kashmir collection receives our dietary brief before your arrival — this is not a request you make at check-in, it's confirmed before you board your flight.

The living heart of Srinagar: 18 sq km of water, houseboats, floating gardens, and a floating post office.

A Himalayan meadow turned ski resort at 2,650m; gondola access to 3,979m Apharwat Peak.

Gateway to the Amarnath Yatra and one of Kashmir's finest walking landscapes; Betaab Valley is a short drive.

Emperor Jehangir's terraced Mughal gardens above Dal Lake, still irrigated by original mountain channels.

"Meadow of Gold" at 2,800m; the trailhead for the Thajiwas Glacier walk and a base for serious trekkers.

The world's finest saffron grows here; October blooms are brief, extraordinary, and almost unknown to mainstream tourism.

The domed marble mosque on the western bank of Dal Lake, housing a relic of the Prophet — one of Srinagar's most important religious sites.

The medieval bazaars of Nowhatta and the artisan lanes of the old city: papier-mâché, Pashmina weaving, walnut-wood carving.

Common questions travelers ask about Kashmir — if you need more help, contact us.
Spring (April to early June) is the most popular window — the Dal Lake is full, the Mughal gardens bloom, and Pahalgam's meadows are green. If snow is your reason, target December to February for Gulmarg's ski season, though Srinagar itself can get cold and grey. October is quietly exceptional: apple orchards, chinar colour, and crowds that have thinned but the weather hasn't turned harsh. Monsoon (July–August) brings some rain to the valley but is still viable — Sonmarg and higher treks remain accessible.
